MANCHESTER UTD
Tiger of England Football
Their domination has become relentless. A third successive Premier League title is their 18th overall and sixth in the past ten years. A combination of fear, awe and admiration is a reasonable response to the tangible proof that the level of determination emanating from the manager's office at Old Trafford is undimmed by a surplus of success, and with no weakening of motivation, there is no reason to foresee a weakening of a team that remains relatively young and fully aware of their potential to re-write history.
For a club growing accustomed to domination, complacency should be a weakness, and probably was a factor in their autumn stagnation. So the paradox for their rivals - especially those located nearby - to consider and curse is that the closer they claw, the fiercer the United response. As remarked elsewhere, with the stats to prove it, United are the kings of recovery and at their most dangerous when beaten. Or challenged.
Rio Ferdinand's reflection this weekend included the observation that "beating Liverpool makes it all the sweeter". For a Londoner previously employed at Leeds, that remark may seem somewhat inappropriate. But Ferdinand's attitude is an ominous warning of what is still to come and the bitterness of the contest to be fought over the next 12 months.
Now level on 18 with Liverpool for winning the most championships in the history of English football, 2009/10 is poised to be the ultimate fight for the ultimate bragging right, made all the more potent by the probability that next season will take the shape of a straight shoot-out between the powerhouses of the north-west. The good news for the red side of Merseyside is that they have closed the gap. The bad news is that their proximity is all that United and their perch-knocking manager will require for motivation to inspire another season of relentless domination.
